An Unexpected Opportunity: A Visit to the Radio City Tower
An Unexpected Opportunity: A Visit to the Radio City Tower

Back in November 2024, we received some surprising news that would mark the beginning of an exciting chapter for ArroweSound Hospital Radio. After hearing that Bauer Media was vacating St John’s Beacon—better known as “The Radio City Tower”—our chairman, Dave, decided to reach out. He inquired whether they might have any unwanted equipment that could be donated to our station on the Wirral.
To Dave’s astonishment, Bauer responded positively, and they invited him to visit the iconic tower in Liverpool to see what equipment might be available. Little did we know, this would lead to an unforgettable experience and a wealth of new opportunities for our radio station.
A Radio Geek’s Dream Come True
The following week, Dave and our Co-Chair, Steve, made their way up to Liverpool. Both are seasoned veterans in the world of community and hospital radio, with a deep passion for everything “radio”—or as they like to say, they’re “Radio Geeks.” So when the opportunity to tour such a legendary broadcast hub arose, it felt like a dream come true.
Once they arrived at St John’s Beacon, they were whisked up in a 30-second lift ride, taking them a staggering 450 feet above the bustling Liverpool skyline. It was a view to remember!
Upon arrival, they were greeted by Andy, one of Bauer’s engineers, who would be their guide through the Tower. What followed was a deep dive into the inner workings of one of the UK’s most iconic radio stations.
The Ultimate Behind-the-Scenes Tour
The tour was nothing short of incredible. From the green room to the boardroom, the “zoo” (a bustling area of radio activity), and even the hidden workshops, Dave and Steve got a rare look behind the scenes of a major broadcasting facility. And then there was the infamous bunker studio—an intriguing, yet essential part of Bauer’s setup.
Andy shared fascinating insights about the different areas of the tower, and together, they identified the equipment that might be of use for ArroweSound Hospital Radio. The goal was to compile a list of items that could help enhance our station’s setup.
Memories Captured on Camera
Throughout the visit, Dave and Steve took plenty of photos to remember the experience. From panoramic shots of Liverpool to candid moments inside the Tower, every photo tells a story of the day’s excitement.
But that’s not all. Andy also explained the process for officially requesting the equipment, and we were tasked with sending over our list to Bauer once the tour was complete.
We’ve included some of the best photos from the tour below, so you can experience a taste of what we saw that day.
Stay tuned for Part 2, where we’ll reveal what happened next and how this visit changed the future of ArroweSound Hospital Radio!
